The Washtenaw County Health Department is seeking applications for a Public Health Assistant within our Community Health Promotion Division. This paid position will support community health promotion initiatives, often grant-funded or focused on specific public health issues, and requires basic understanding of public health practice and an ability to work with community members and partners. Health promotion initiatives aim to support health broadly through increased access to resources, policy or environmental change, as well as health education.
This paid position will support Prescription for Health, an innovative program that connects low-income patients at risk for a chronic disease to the farmers markets. This program aims to increase fruit and vegetable consumption among participants and encourage healthy behavior change. Enrolled participants receive nutrition education and support from program staff and receive $100 in Prescription for Health tokens to purchase fruits and vegetables at participating farmers markets. This position will be in-person and remote. Occasionally working non-traditional hours (Saturdays; early mornings and evenings) may be needed. Total number of hours for this position: up to 600 (the majority of which to be worked May-August). Desired start date: May. Desired end date: November/December.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
Interacting directly with program participants, community members and partners as well as Health Department staff (e.g. health care partners, community organizations, vendors, program staff, community health workers).
Planning and implementing educational initiatives and activities (including developing materials and resources) for a variety of settings and with diverse populations/audiences. This may include leading or organizing small group education or events and requires public speaking on relevant topics, such as nutrition, goal setting, substance abuse prevention, safe use of medications, or preventing disease or injury.
Identifying and implementing ways to engage participants and convey accurate, understandable health information in remote or in-person settings.
Working with stakeholders to develop and review accurate, appropriate, and responsive health materials and resources in accordance with program goals and objectives.
Reaching out to current and potential partners to continue or expand program activities.
Reviewing and summarizing current literature, research, policy, or legislation relevant to the program, such as evidence-based interventions that support health improvements among specific populations or state medical marijuana legislation.
Managing incoming phone calls, emails, or requests.
Supporting conference and event planning, including working with vendors and making purchases in accordance with County guidelines and procedures.
Helping create and maintain relevant health communication materials, including website information, health education materials, social media content and graphics, videos, and campaign content. This may include working effectively with available software and hardware to create or edit multimedia content for a variety of platforms.
Completing program objectives and activities based on grant requirements and/or the applicant’s skills and interests, in consultation with department staff.
Utilizing current Countywide and/or department specific software to complete assignments. This may also include specific program reporting or evaluation, such as SPSS data entry and analysis or monitoring activities and outcomes according to grant requirements.

Experience with behavior change theory or techniques, such as Motivational Interviewing (preferred).
Possession of valid Michigan Vehicle Operator’s license or State issued identification card.
Duties require sufficient mobility to work in a normal office setting and use standard office equipment including a computer, vision to read printed materials and a video display terminal (computer) screen and hearing and speech sufficient to communicate in person or over the telephone.
The employee must be mobile both in an office setting and in the field with the ability to stand, sit, stoop and kneel, use hands to finger, handle, or feel and reach with hands and arms. The employee must lift or push/pull objects of up to 30lbs without assistance. Accommodation will be made, as needed, for employees required to lift or move objects that exceed this weight. While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works remotely, in the office, and at other work sites and regularly travels between work sites using a motor vehicle. Though applicable safety procedures are documented and utilized, the incumbent may be exposed to unsanitary or unhygienic materials, individuals and situations while performing required duties. The noise level in the work environment varies from quiet to moderate.
Active enrollment in a Bachelors or Masters Degree program or equivalent to the completion of two years of college with an emphasis on Public Health, Nutrition, Health Communications or a related field is strongly preferred.
Ten (10) months to one (1) year of customer service experience
Access to a vehicle may be required for some positions. This temporary position is full-time 37.5 hours per week for a term beginning spring through fall. Typical work hours are 8:30am – 5:00pm, Monday – Friday. Working non-traditional hours (Saturdays; early mornings or evenings) may be required.
