Job Description

We are a fast-paced, growing construction company that delivers safety, quality, and on-time work, that specializes in heavy civil construction that includes earthwork, concrete work, steel erection and more. The ideal person will be highly organized, self-motivated, have a working knowledge of construction equipment and techniques, drawing and specifications, building materials and required standards applicable to assigned projects.

The Quality Control Manager will be accountable for assisting with the implementation and maintenance of Spencer Construction’s Quality Management system on the jobsite which includes the development and execution of the Quality Control Plan, managing all quality matters regarding work activities, testing staff, laboratory, and materials, along with inspecting final products to ensure they conform to applicable contract documents and industry standards. This position requires an advanced knowledge and the consistent exercise of discretion and judgment in analyzing and interpreting information before making a reasoned recommendation.

All work will be performed under the supervision of the Company Quality Control Manager but will oversee managing day-to-day quality related duties on a jobsite and reporting to Project and Company Managers.

This position requires that the incumbent be able to travel 85% – 95% of the time to the various project sites.

Essential Job Functions:

Implement Quality Control Plan and Company policy to ensure materials meet quality standards by analyzing and interpreting testing results.

Manage and coordinate field inspections on various work activities and verify all components of each activity complies with project drawings and specifications. Be able to communicate deficiencies or discrepancies to both field crews and management.

Supervise technical staff to ensure compliance with quality programs. Evaluate technician performance and assist management with job performance coaching. Evaluate vendor performance including services provided by third-party engineering firms.

Complete daily reports that are legible and contain the necessary details for all the work activities, tests, and inspections performed for the day.

Maintain accurate, detailed records of all testing and inspection results and report in an organized, legible fashion to leadership and project owners.

Identify, document, and track deficiencies along with the corresponding corrective actions. Be proactive in detecting potential deficiencies in order to prevent repetitive defects and rework.

Provide leadership for the implementation, enforcement and continuous improvement of company policies and processes with regards to quality and safety.

Additional Job Functions:

Train and coach employees in quality standards and expectations based on industry standards and contract documents.
Must be able to understand technical drawings, specifications, and test results.
Safely perform duties in compliance with OSHA/MSHA, company policies, procedures, and industry standards.
Gather test and log samples of materials and inspections, ensuring quality in all phases of testing.
Interact professionally and positively with owner representatives, business partners, and co-workers.
Obtain and/or maintain certifications as required for the position.
Attend meetings with owner, general contractors, and subcontractors.
Must be able to work as a positive team member by providing viable solutions to obstacles while maintaining integrity in the obligations to the contract documents.

Required Skills and Abilities:

Associate degree in Engineering Technology, Construction Management or related field. Or High School Graduate or GED with 3-5 years’ experience in the construction industry.
At least 3 – 5 years in quality control, materials testing, special inspections, or project management (Superintendent, Project Engineer or Construction Manager).
Valid and Unrestricted Driver’s License
Experience working on multiple projects at once and managing time appropriately
Must be able to travel to various project sites (85- 95%)

Preferred Skills and Abilities:

5 or more years’ experience in quality control, materials testing, special inspections, or project management (Superintendent, Project Engineer or Construction Manager).
Experience in the Construction industry
Current Construction Quality Management (QCM)
Knowledge of the EM 385, ASTM, ACI, AWS, and other consensus standards
Excel, PowerPoint, Bluebeam, Adobe, and other computer-based software
Public speaking, coaching, teaching, training

This position operates at professional construction sites, requiring the ability to communicate with verbally others on site, in person and over the telephone, ability to read printed materials, signs and directions, stamina to maintain attention despite interruptions, ability to lift, push, pull, carry, handle or feel objects, supplies, tools, machinery and/or controls weighing up to 50 pounds and reach with hands and arms; climb stairs and/or ladders; balance, bend, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, lift overhead, traverse around or otherwise position one’s self around the required work and safety requirements to navigating and perform activities on various construction sites in a safe manner.

Will be required to work on project sites and operate vehicles, trailers, machinery, equipment and other tools within local, state and federal safety guidelines.
This position operates in a professional field environment. The position requires working outside, frequently for long periods of time in all weather, including extreme hot and cold temperatures.
While working, the employee might be exposed to various chemicals, vapors, pollutants, virus or other air-borne pathogens, gases, uneven surfaces, loud noises, moving vehicles or machines and dust/debris.
