Job Description

The City of Cape Girardeau is seeking to create an eligibility list of qualified applicants for the position of Firefighter Cadet. Firefighter Cadets are responsible for performing tasks assigned to them through written policies and procedures, or verbal orders and directions. These tasks enable the candidate to obtain the knowledge, skills and abilities to move up to the position of Firefighter/EMT. The primary focus and duty of the Cadet is to: study, develop, practice and master the knowledge and skills necessary to obtain a Missouri FF I and II certification or IFSAC equivalent; study, develop, practice and master the knowledge and skills necessary to obtain a Missouri EMT-B certification; study, develop, practice and master the knowledge and skills laid forth in the department probationary firefighter task book; performs at or above standards established by the department; adheres to policies and procedures; helps to ensure that problems that arise are handled in a direct, timely, and professional manner; helps maintain a level of cooperation, coordination, and communication with chief officers, captains, firefighters and each other to ensure the most effective, efficient, safe, and professional delivery of services to the community as possible; and, performs other related duties as assigned.
Applicants must: be at least 18 years of age; possess a valid driver’s license; possess a high school diploma or GED equivalent; Currently be enrolled in a course to obtain a Missouri / or National Registry Emergency Medical Technician Basic (EMT-B) license or Paramedic (EMT-P) license, or Firefighter I and II (Missouri and/or National 1001 Standard IFSAC and/or Pro Board approved certification). Applicants enrolled in a program and actively pursuing one of the above certifications are eligible to apply.
Preferred Certification(s): Possession of a fire or EMS services related degree from an accredited institution.
The testing process consists of: an entry-level written exam that includes material designed to measure mechanical comprehension, spatial orientation, an understanding of illustrated materials, behavioral skills, basic arithmetic, and reading and writing abilities. A physical agility test graded pass/fail that consists of a series of tests to determine the applicant’s ability to perform critical physical tasks necessary for the position of firefighter, and an oral interview designed to evaluate a candidate’s experience, training, and personal qualifications. Prior to employment, eligible applicants will be subject to a physical examination, drug screen, interviews, and thorough background investigations.Successful applicants will serve in a one-year probationary period, which includes a supervised probationary study program. We do not have a residency requirement for our firefighters.
